چکیده

This paper addresses the problem of optimal planning of a line for a container shipping company. Given estimated weekly splittable demands between pairs of ports and bounds for the turnaround time, our goal is to determine the subset of ports to be called and the amount of containers to be shipped between each pair of ports, so as to maximize the profit of the shipping company. In order to save possible leasing or storage costs of empty containers at the respective ports, our approach takes into account the repositioning of empty containers. We first propose two new MIP formulations that are tailored for barge container ship routing in the inland waterway transport. We then demonstrate that the models can be extended to general maritime shipping given the outbound-inbound principle. On the publicly available set of benchmark instances for barge container routing, our models significantly outperform the existing approaches from the literature. We also propose some variants of the problem that are of interest for practitioners in the domain, including optimization of the turnaround time, allowing multiple round-trips, and dealing with unsplittable demands. Numerical experiments are provided to compare the computational performance of the models and the impact of both empty container repositioning and unsplittable demands on the total profit.

The container shipping network design problem with empty container repositioning

This paper addresses the design of container liner shipping service networks by explicitly taking into account empty container repositioning. Two key and interrelated issues, those of deploying ships and containers are usually treated separately by most existing studies on shipping network design. In this paper, both issues are considered simultaneously. The problem is formulated as a two-stage...

A Tactical Planning Model for Liner Shipping Companies: Managing Container Flow and Ship Deployment Jointly

This paper addresses two practical problems from a liner shipping company, i.e., the container flow management problem and the ship deployment problem at the tactical planning level. The joint optimization model, as well as, a sequential model, is formulated to solve the problems. Our results show the company should implement the joint optimization model at the tactical planning level to improv...

An optimization model for management of empty containers in distribution network of a logistics company under uncertainty

In transportation via containers, unbalanced movement of loaded containers forces shipping companies to reposition empty containers. This study addresses the problem of empty container repositioning (ECR) in the distribution network of a European logistics company, where some restrictions impose decision making in an uncertain environment. The problem involves dispatching empty contain...

Competitive Liner Shipping Network Design Management Science DTU Management Engineering

We present a solution method for the liner shipping network design problem which is a core strategic planning problem faced by container carriers. We propose the first practical algorithm which explicitly handles transshipment time limits for all demands. Individual sailing speeds at each service leg are used to balance sailings speed against operational costs, hence ensuring that the found net...
